A Short Message About Sara...

After an 18 month battle with AML and ALL (two types of Leukemia), Sara passed away, at home, with family by her side on Monday morning, age 6.

Over the last 6 months her family spent many weekends doing the things Sara loved -- spending time at the beach, visiting her grandmother in the Bay Area, drawing, traveling, and many other things. We knew this was a possibility, but chose to cherish and celebrate her remaining life instead of holing her up in a hospital. That was the right decision.

The outpouring of support throughout this battle has been a truly inspirational miracle -- we have met more kind-hearted strangers than we could ever imagine, and received so much from generous supporters as we fought to bring Sara through her cancer battle. We hope that Sara's strength in the face of disease, love in the face misery, and smile in the face of pain gives each of you a new hope for what is possible.

Through the work done to save Sara, other patients will find marrow donors in the years to come and go on to live happy lives -- this is Sara's legacy, and for that we are so very grateful.

Thank you to each of you who have worked so hard for Sara, and please always remember that no child should go through what she has ... and that increasing the number of willing Asian donors will ensure that. Please support marrow donation, and cherish those whom you love.

If you'd like to leave any comments or share how Sara may have touched your life, please feel free!

Reading through the many loving messages to Sara, Ginger, Robert and Kelsey in this guestbook brought tears to my eyes. There are no easy answers for why so many children on this earth have to suffer in so many ways. Though I never met Sara, working closely with you in the past, Ginger, I am certain she could not have found a mother with a bigger heart than yours. As a mother myself, I simply cannot imagine the pain of losing a child. I know that big heart of yours and Sara’s father’s and sister Kelsey’s – are struggling now with that loss of daughter, sister, joyful warrior-child Sara in her physical form. Undoubtedly though, her spirit lives on and will continue to shine brightly, lovingly, protectingly… With sympathy and love,
Tanja

I am so sorry for your loss. I know only to well the sense of shock you must be going through because though we who have lived through our childrens fight against cancer and know the statistics, having our worst nightmare actual occur is almost uncomprehensible! Sara was a sweet child and so well loved I hope the knowledge that you did all you had in your power to do for her will give you comfort.

Robert, Ginger & Kelsey: Love from your neighbors in Three Rivers. There are no words as we passed you on the street, but were alwasy encourages by your happy outlook. I lost my "baby" sister last August to cancer and can only say grief is endured and we manage. In the most unbelievable ways she also taught us thru her death how to live. Sara and Rhonda have elevated my thinking about our journey and today we are planting a Jacaronda tree that we will baby thru the winter storms and look at everyday to remind us of Sara's & Rhonda's love and courage. Much love, the Lockharts

Dear Ginger, Robert & Family:

I visited Sara's website on 17th and I am very sad to know Sara has left. Although I have not got a chance to meet Sara, I am glad that she has been in a loving family for last 6 years. We wish we can do more to help her in searching for the marrow. Sara will be in our heart forever!

Please take care!
